Senior Software Engineer (Staff)

New Today

Currencycloud was acquired by Visa in December 2021. Our Senior Java Engineers are responsible for implementing an industry-leading API that has already processed over 50 billion USD of cross‑border transactions for over 5 million end users, and is available to our clients 24/7. We are not stopping there, and our engineers are at the forefront of taking us forward to meet the demands of even greater scale. Our stack runs on AWS as a set of distributed applications using Kubernetes and a microservice‑led architecture, and we are also utilising Kafka for streaming and PACT for contract testing.

What you’ll get to do

  • Play a key role within your cross‑functional team, taking responsibility for your services and the technology within them.
  • Work in squads that are building out brand new parts of our payments platform, focusing on high availability, cloud‑native, microservice concepts.
  • Lead technical discussions and system design, and mentor more junior members of the team.

You’ll get

  • Clear ownership of your domain.
  • A clean, modern codebase.
  • An independent path to production.
  • Strong platform and product support.
  • The ability to make real changes with real business value.

Our tech stack includes

  • Object‑oriented programming in Java 11+, ideally using Spring Boot.
  • Highly‑scalable, highly‑available, cloud‑native applications on AWS, written to 12‑factor principles and fitting into our microservices architecture.
  • Cloud‑related tools, services and distributed system observability, e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, ElasticSearch, log‑management systems, and Datadog APM.
  • API specifications conforming to the OpenAPI (Swagger) standard, providing a clean boundary both externally with customers and internally between microservices.
  • SQL, with large SQL databases providing the persistence layer; you’ll work with and understand limitations of large datastores.
  • Infrastructure automation primarily owned by the infrastructure team, with familiarity with AWS, Terraform and Docker beneficial.
  • Testing approaches including TDD, BDD and contract testing; frameworks used include JUnit, RSpec and Cucumber.
  • Agile development following the Spotify‑Squads‑and‑Tribes model, delivering incremental improvements iteratively.
  • Continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines for repeatable builds and consistent deployments.
  • GitHub and GitHub PR review process as core parts of our developer workflow.
  • Cross‑team collaboration, working with Product Owners and QA as part of product development.

This is a hybrid position. Expectation of days in office will be confirmed by your hiring manager.

Qualifications

  • 5 + years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s Degree, or at least 2 years of work experience with an advanced degree (e.g. Master’s, MBA, JD, MD), or 0 years of work experience with a PhD, or 8 + years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience in Java backend development using functional Java (v8+) and Spring (ideally Spring Boot).
  • Agile experience (Scrum or Kanban) in cross‑functional teams.
  • Expert knowledge of Docker, EKS, AWS (public cloud) and Kafka.
