What you'll be doing? The Design and Technical teams are involved in all aspects of housing design and innovation, and this team is responsible for researching the best materials at the best cost. The role supports ensuring the Technical team is resourced, directed, and provided with training and development, with clear guidance on responsibilities and workload management.

In design, there is a variety of sites, many using existing buildings, each with unique problems to solve. The team focuses on new materials, sustainability, value, and navigating changing building and environmental legislation. Most team members have an architectural or engineering background, offering opportunities to gain expertise in design and project management in a thought-provoking setting. Reporting to the Technical Director, you will help ensure the Technical team delivers appropriate services and maintains effective communication and development within the department.

Responsibilities

  • Assess potential developments and produce detailed technical reports, including site visits with management to ensure cost-effective engineered solutions.
  • Manage the team daily (internal and external) to provide the required level of service in a proactive and professional manner to enable other departments to fulfil their roles.
  • Lead, motivate, develop, appraise and performance manage staff to achieve high performance and meet company needs.
  • Coordinate production information to a written programme to meet company targets for a controlled and cost-effective finish to sites.
  • Ensure provision of drawings to site on a weekly basis as appropriate.
  • Establish and enforce quality and standards in schemes and maintain the company's good image.
  • Ensure schemes are designed to BDW standards, considering building, marketing, and economic factors; complete designs within time limits while accounting for external factors (planning, highways, drainage, service companies, local committees, action groups, and resident issues).
  • Produce engineering site feasibilities in collaboration with the land department and external authorities to comply with standards and business needs.
  • Develop good working relationships with site staff and department heads to ensure schemes are constructed as intended and to capture feedback for future improvements.
  • Comply with the Group's Health, Safety & Environment Policy and ensure team compliance.
  • Implement new ideas and methods to improve the organisation's goals and reputation.
  • Develop strong relationships with Local Authorities and apply knowledge of Local Authority processes to secure approvals and support fast, marketable, economical house building.

What You’ll Need

  • High potential with the ability to progress to Technical Director within 12-18 months.
  • Excellent team motivator with drive and tenacity to achieve business goals.
  • Excellent communicator with strong attention to detail.
  • Extensive experience with established development methodologies.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks to meet changing business needs.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role or at the level of Design/Technical/Commercial Manager at a major company.
  • Knowledge of major functions within Technical services and their impact on land acquisition and development.
  • Qualification as an Engineer or a Quantity Surveyor (HNC in Engineering, RIBA qualification, or NVQ Level 5 in a relevant subject).
  • Ability to identify issues affecting land value or development costs and determine appropriate allowances.
