As part of their continued growth across Greater Manchester, they are looking for an experienced Senior Traffic Engineer to play a key role in delivering projects within the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) framework and several Local Authority programmes. This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative, forward-thinking team that specialises in traffic management, active travel, and public realm improvements, driving meaningful change across the region. The Role As Senior Traffic Engineer, you will provide technical leadership and design expertise on a variety of traffic engineering and transport improvement schemes. Working closely with Principal Engineers, Project Managers, and key stakeholders, youโ€™ll oversee scheme design, delivery, and stakeholder engagement to ensure successful project outcomes. Key responsibilities will include:
Leading the development of traffic engineering solutions including TROs, traffic calming schemes, pedestrian crossings, speed management, active travel and accessibility improvements, and junction redesign. Preparing and reviewing design documentation โ€” including drawings, reports, specifications, and cost estimates โ€” across all project stages. Managing resources, budgets, and project delivery programmes, ensuring work is completed to time, cost, and quality standards. Providing technical input for feasibility studies, concept and detailed designs, safety assessments, and scheme appraisals. Coordinating consultations with councillors, residents, businesses, and statutory stakeholders. Supporting and mentoring junior staff, contributing to skills development within the team. Liaising with TfGM and Local Authorities, including preparing progress reports, bid support documentation, and funding applications. Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, standards, and Health & Safety requirements. Driving continuous improvement in design delivery and promoting sustainable transport solutions.
What Weโ€™re Looking For
HNC/BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. Chartered or working towards Chartered status with Institution of Civil Engineers or Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (or equivalent). Proven experience in traffic engineering design and delivery, ideally within a consultancy or Local Authority setting. Strong working knowledge of relevant standards including Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions. Demonstrable experience of developing and implementing Traffic Regulation Orders. Experience delivering schemes such as traffic calming, cycling infrastructure, parking management, bus priority, and junction improvements. Familiarity with legislation such as the Road Traffic Regulation Act, the Traffic Management Act, and the Highways Act. Experience working with TfGM frameworks and/or Local Authority projects is highly desirable. Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to manage consultations effectively. Understanding of Road Safety Audits, CDM Regulations, and street works permit schemes. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
