Software Engineering Manager – Java / Microservices

Location: London (Hybrid – 2–3 days in office per week)

Contract: Full-time

We’re partnering with a fast-growing global marketplace business that’s transforming how people discover and experience the world’s best destinations. Backed by a leading private equity firm and already serving millions of customers worldwide, they’re scaling their technology teams to deliver a world-class digital product.

They’re now looking for a Software Engineering Manager to take ownership of a talented team of up to 7 senior engineers. This is a backend-heavy group working with Java, Spring Boot, and microservice architecture at scale.

The Role as the Software Engineering Manager:

• Lead, coach, and inspire a team of senior software engineers, fostering collaboration and high standards.
• Guide the design and delivery of scalable, distributed backend systems in Java and microservices.
• Partner with product and engineering leadership to turn business goals into technical outcomes.
• Stay hands-on enough to shape architecture, influence code quality, and set technical direction.
• Drive best practices across testing, observability, security, and performance.
• Champion an engineering culture of ownership, creativity, and continuous improvement.

What We’re Looking For as the Software Engineering Manager:

• 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience, primarily in Java and microservices.
• At least 2 years’ experience in people management, ideally moving into leadership recently and bringing fresh ideas.
• Strong background designing scalable distributed systems with modern tooling.
• Agile mindset, comfortable working in a fast-paced product-led environment.
• Experience mentoring engineers and shaping engineering best practices.
• Nice to have: exposure to React, AWS, Kubernetes, Kafka, and modern testing tools (Cypress, Playwright, etc.).
