PURPOSE OF THE ROLE Our Bitesize team is currently looking for a Software Engineering Team Lead to help them develop the future of their education product. We are in an exciting time where we are looking to evolve Bitesize, so it adapts to our user needs. We are ensuring we deliver curriculum-aligned content for students, teachers and parents to support their learning journey. This team lead will be supporting our Glasgow team as they develop critical features and capabilities. You will guide engineers to perform at their best, support their career aspirations, and work closely with other discipline leads and editorial stakeholders. The team lead is critical to delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions that meet user needs. It involves guiding engineering approaches and best practices with other engineering leaders to ensure we meet high expectations for engineering quality. YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT The role of a Software Engineering Team Lead is hybrid, combining expert technical knowledge with leading your team and managing engineers day to day and their careers. The focus of the role includes:
People: Recruit, mentor, coach and manage staff, assuring the quality of their work and professional development. Environment: Create the environment in which people can be their best. Work with department leaders to foster a positive and diverse culture and align across teams. Technical Expertise: Collaborate across the technical community to improve software, share knowledge and improve processes/practices. User Focus: Deliver solutions that meet the needs of our users.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Track record of growing engineers with a focus on mentoring, coaching and development. Experience building user-facing accessible front-end products using web technologies like React, Typescript, NodeJS. Experience building APIs and back-end services using AWS technologies such as Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, CloudFormation. Skilled in managing multiple product and technical priorities with practical decision making in a collaborative cross-disciplinary team. Experience measuring, shaping and improving agile practices to ensure continuous delivery.
DESIRED:
Experience working on large mono-repo products backed by design systems. Experience leading a team’s approach to operational stability and incident management. Experience with experimentation and data-driven decision making.
