We’re part of Octopus, a multi-billion group focused on transforming industries through innovative companies.

The role
We’re looking for a Squad Engineering Manager to lead our Cloud Resilience team — a critical squad within our engineering organisation responsible for the core infrastructure behind our cloud-native investment platform. This is a hands-on leadership role combining technical insight, stakeholder engagement, and strategic delivery. You’ll shape and deliver the roadmap, line-manage engineers in your squad, support their growth and wellbeing, and help shape the team through recruitment and onboarding.
Our team ensures the core investment platform remains reliable, secure, and scalable, supporting product squads while keeping operational complexity low. We empower squads to build and run their own services by providing self-service platforms, tooling, and guidance, rather than acting as a centralised infrastructure team that owns everything end-to-end.
We’re primarily in AWS, utilising Lambda, ECS, SQS, API Gateway among others. Our database engine is MongoDB and our observability platform is Datadog. Our application is written in Typescript/NodeJS and our infrastructure is defined in Terraform.
Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, and line-manage a team of engineers—supporting their personal and professional growth, providing regular feedback, and driving hiring, onboarding, and retention.
- Own and drive the squad roadmap, defining problems, prioritising work, and aligning delivery with business and platform goals.
- Represent the team in quarterly planning, communicating goals, trade-offs, and prioritisation rationale.
- Collaborate across teams to ensure platform resilience, security, and observability are considered in design and delivery.
- Lead incident response, own production readiness, and embed best practices for monitoring, alerting, and fault tolerance.
- Guide architectural outcomes and contribute to implementations—particularly in infrastructure automation, cloud reliability, and developer tooling.
- Champion the use of Terraform, Datadog, and AWS-native tooling to manage infrastructure, observability, and runtime environments.
- Measure and improve key platform metrics—uptime, latency, cost-efficiency, incident resolution time, and platform usability.
This role’s for you if
- You're a strong engineering leader with experience building and running resilient cloud platforms, and you enjoy leading teams at the intersection of infrastructure and product.
- You're a pragmatic software engineer—comfortable with JavaScript/TypeScript but open to other languages like Go or Python.
- You take a product mindset to platform work: engaging with stakeholders, framing problems, setting priorities, and communicating trade-offs.
- You enjoy collaborating across engineering, product, and operations to align goals and ensure platform stability and scalability.
- You care deeply about operational excellence, automation, and reliability, security, and usability.
- You’ve led or contributed to modern cloud-native environments and are fluent in AWS best practices, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and monitoring (Datadog).
- You thrive in an environment with ownership to define direction, drive delivery, and represent your team’s work to the wider business.
- You want to be part of a company on a mission to transform investment infrastructure through thoughtful technology and strong engineering culture.
This role isn’t for you if
- You rely on a lot of top-down direction. You’ll have freedom and ownership and will be expected to shape your progression.
- You’re not comfortable in a fast-paced environment; speed and scalability are essential.
- You struggle to follow through on ideas and prefer wait-to-see approaches.
- You don’t like change. You should be comfortable with ambiguity and rapid growth.
What’s in It For You
We offer a generous mix of benefits including:
- 27 days holiday + bank holidays (some flexible) + birthday day off + 3 days per year for dependant leave
- Two volunteering days per year
- Length of service award – one month paid sabbatical at eight years
- 6% employer pension contribution and life assurance
- Private medical insurance with AXA Health
- Enhanced parental leave
- MacBook and up to £500 home office set up budget
- £750 per person learning budget
- Option to work abroad for up to six weeks a year
- Health and wellbeing initiatives including free therapy via Wellness Cloud, mental health support via Headspace
- Financial wellbeing focus including access to Octopus Money, Octopus Share Incentive Plan, will writing via Octopus Legacy
- Perkbox – Flexi-points for discounts and perks
- Initiatives like Cycle to Work and Octopus Electric Vehicle Leasing
Our culture
We put people first and foster a transparent, inclusive environment that encourages diversity of thought, challenge, and experimentation.
Interview process
Our interviews are conversational. You can expect the following stages (after an initial chat with our Talent team):
- First stage – one-hour cloud system design interview
- Second stage – one-hour code review interview
- Third stage – 45-min Leadership & Collaboration interview
- Final stage – 45-min culture-based interview
We close the role once we have enough applications for the next stage. Please apply soon to hear back within one to two weeks.
All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to age, ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, family or parental status, national origin, veteran status, neurodiversity or disability status.
