System Engineer

New Today

We’re a growing startup in the heart of Bath, building next‑generation autonomy technologies that will transform the future of aviation. Our work is opening new capabilities for uncrewed flight — the kind of operations that haven’t yet been realised in the UK.

We’re already collaborating with major partners including Rolls‑Royce, AdaCore, aerospace primes, air navigation service providers and the defence industry, giving us the reach and resources to make a real impact.

Everyone here has autonomy. Our teams decide how best to tackle the challenges in front of them, and everyone’s encouraged to get involved. You’ll work alongside people who care deeply about what they’re building, in an environment where ideas are shared openly and ideas are valued, coming from across the whole company.

If you want to develop world‑first technology and have a genuine say in how it happens, you’ll fit right in at Volant.

What you’ll do

  • Contribute to the design, development, integration, and testing of the Traject DAA (Detect and Avoid) system across diverse customer environments and operational contexts
  • Define and manage system and subsystem requirements, ensuring full traceability from high‑level requirements through to implementation and verification
  • Participate in the creation, review, and maintenance of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) to ensure clear and consistent communication between system components
  • Support the development and qualification of Volant’s Human‑Machine Interface (HMI), ensuring usability and compliance with operational needs
  • Contribute to the certification process by developing supporting documentation and engaging in regulatory reviews
  • Prepare detailed and compliant documentation to support product certification efforts

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience applying the systems engineering V‑model, from concept through to verification and validation
  • Capability in end‑to‑end requirements management, including requirements elicitation, specification, traceability, and verification
  • Experience authoring documentation required for software‑related certification applications (e.g., for aviation or safety‑critical systems)
  • Proficient in engaging with end users and stakeholders to derive operational and functional requirements
  • Ability to interpret, derive, and validate requirements from a range of sources, including standards, regulations, and stakeholder inputs
  • Background or domain knowledge in aerospace systems and associated operational environments
  • Experience integrating systems that span multiple domains, including cloud‑based infrastructure and embedded platforms
  • Solid understanding of software assurance standards, specifically DO-178C

What We Offer

  • A personal development programme with dedicated support
  • Stock options
  • Hybrid working on‑site in Bath (Mon–Wed) with optional remote (Thu–Fri)
  • 25 days paid holiday + public holidays with an additional day per year of service (up to 4 days)

  • A collaborative, inclusive team environment with real autonomy and influence

Diversity and Inclusion

At Volant Autonomy, we are committed to building an inclusive and diverse workplace. We base hiring and promotion decisions solely on merit and actively work to identify and reduce bias throughout our recruitment and career development processes.
