Overview
Tunnelling Technical Director/Team Lead – lead our Tunnelling and Underground Structures Team at AECOM. The role combines leadership and the technical engineering challenges of a fast-paced sector and client engagement. The team has approximately 15–20 engineers and a pipeline of exciting projects in the UK and abroad. You will work closely with our London-based team and input into the strategy and direction of the UK tunnelling business, reporting to the UK Director of Tunnelling. In addition to the office leadership, you will be involved in the delivery of projects from a technical perspective.
Responsibilities
- Safety culture and performance: ensure safety is the primary concern of all team members; carry out risk assessments and safety control measures; encourage reporting of incidents and near misses; report safety observations to enable learning and improvement.
- Stakeholder relationships: coordinate local work-winning and business development activities; actively develop and maintain relationships with public sector and contractor clients; lead the production of proposals and review commercial proposals against resourcing schedules.
- Quality control: ensure accuracy of data and forecasting to the Regional Lead for Tunnelling; report leading and lagging indicators of safety, financial performance, work pipeline and other issues affecting delivery.
- Leadership: define and influence the workplace culture; set the tone for communication and collaboration; raise morale and productivity in a positive environment.
- Collaboration: foster collaboration and an inclusive work environment; establish clear goals and rewards; engage with clients and industry bodies to position AECOM to tender work and lead in the industry.
- Delivery and mentorship: contribute to strategy and delivery aspects and lead bids as required; mentor and develop junior team members.
Qualifications
- Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent) with postgraduate experience in a leadership role with a tunnelling team.
- Chartered Engineer (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent).
- Excellent communication (written and spoken) and interpersonal skills.
- Experience in rock and soft ground tunnelling, including tunnels, shafts and deep excavations for transportation, energy and utility projects.
- Experience on large, multi-disciplinary projects with ability to engage across disciplines; capable of taking on roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager or Project Manager and leading bids.
