Tunnelling Technical Director/ Team Lead – Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Join AECOM to lead the growing Tunnelling and Underground Structures Team. The team comprises approximately 15–20 engineers with a pipeline of challenging design projects in the UK and abroad. You will work closely with the London-based team and contribute to the strategy and direction of the UK tunnelling business, reporting to the UK Director of Tunnelling. In addition to the office leadership role, you will be involved in the delivery of projects from a technical perspective.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the Tunnelling team, shaping design strategy and project delivery.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, ensure risk assessments are conducted and safety controls are implemented; encourage reporting of incidents and near misses and share lessons learned.
  • Coordinate local work winning and business development, develop and maintain client and stakeholder relationships, and lead the preparation of proposals and reviews of commercial proposals against resourcing schedules.
  • Ensure quality control through accurate data and forecasting to the Regional Lead for Tunnelling, including reporting safety, financial performance, work pipeline and other delivery indicators.
  • Define and influence workplace culture, foster communication and collaboration within the team, and improve morale, productivity and efficiency.
  • Foster collaboration and an inclusive environment, establish clear goals and client engagement to position AECOM to win tenders and maintain industry leadership.
  • Contribute to projects from concept through operation, providing engineering and construction expertise for multi-year, multimillion-dollar rail and transit schemes.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering (or equivalent) with postgraduate leadership experience in a tunnelling team.
  • Chartered Engineer status (EI, ICE, IStructE or equivalent).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in rock and soft ground tunneling, including tunnels, shafts and deep excavations for transportation, energy and utility schemes.
  • Experience working on large, multi-disciplinary projects with ability to engage with and understand different disciplines; capable of taking on roles such as Technical Lead, Design Manager, or Project Manager and leading bids.
