Location/s: Cambridge, Brighton, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Bristol, UK

Recruiter contact: Pranjali Ahuja

Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management, and development consultancy with over 20,000 employees across more than 50 countries and 140+ offices. We work across global industries, delivering work that defines our future and makes an impact in the communities we serve. Our people power our performance – we succeed when they do. We offer opportunities to collaborate, learn, and grow, with a culture that values excellence, inclusion, and empowerment.

As a Water Quality Modeller, you will be part of a large team of water resources, wastewater networks, river impact assessments and flood risk specialists, working with engineers, environmentalists and asset planners to deliver services for UK and international clients. You will use both bespoke and industry standard water quality modelling packages to develop catchment models and integrated drainage and river network models, and explore other activities such as systems modelling, hydrological modelling, hydrodynamic modelling and computational fluid dynamics.

Your input will help project teams deliver complex multidisciplinary projects, addressing impacts of storm overflows and water transfers, catchment scale contaminant contributions, future discharge compliance, and pollution mitigation with social and environmental benefits.

Key Responsibilities and Duties Include

  • Providing support and analytical skills to large datasets to identify explanatory factors and relationships to inform water quality assessment
  • Supporting the team in delivering complex modelling projects, working with experts across disciplines to apply attention to detail and numerical skills to environmental engineering projects
  • Collaborating with a project team to provide clients with accurate and timely outputs
  • Presenting project outcomes internally and externally

With climate change and regulation driving demand, we work on river and catchment modelling to assess water quality compliance and advise on mitigation. We have experience with catchment investigations, SOAF and UPM studies, and are expanding modelling approaches across coastal water quality, source apportionment, and nature-based solutions.

We have major AMP8 frameworks with most UK water companies and a global reach to support regulators, asset owners and investors. The role offers opportunities to drive innovation, work across disciplines, and develop our people while strengthening our offering.

Candidate specification

We are looking for someone with a proven track record and a passion for learning and innovation in this fast-moving discipline. You will need to have:

  • Relevant degree-level qualifications (e.g., geography, mathematics, environmental sciences, civil engineering, or related disciplines)
  • Knowledge of modelling processes (e.g., hydrology, hydrodynamics, sediments and water quality processes)
  • Some understanding of water industry regulation related to water quality
  • Experience with one or more industry standard software such as InfoWorks ICM, SIMCAT-SAGIS and/or MIKE11
  • Experience with coding/statistical techniques is advantageous
  • Willingness to innovate
  • Excellent communication and written skills
