Overview

Location: On site at Wiltshire Scrapstore, Unit 5, Griffin Estate, Bowden Hill, Lacock, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 2PP. (On occasion, there will also be visits to satellite and event locations as well as offsite meetings with other organisations)

Hours: 30 hours during opening hours (exact times/days to be agreed)

Contract Type: Permanent (subject to 6 months probation period).

Start date: Ideally by January 2026, subject to the successful candidate’s notice period.

Job Summary

We are seeking a strategic thinker with the ability to develop the organisation’s business strategy with vision and pragmatism. The successful candidate must be highly organised and motivated overseeing key managerial and administrative responsibilities. This role requires expertise in managing finances, funding applications, policies, staff and volunteers while ensuring smooth daily operations. The ideal candidate will be a confident leader with strong communication skills who is capable of fostering a positive and supportive workplace while promoting the charity’s central ethos, aims and values.

About Us

Wiltshire Scrapstore is an award-winning environmental charity. We collect resources that would otherwise go to landfill and redistribute them for creative activities and projects of all kinds. We welcome all ages to indulge their creativity through our physical resources and our range of activities and workshops. We have a growing public membership of over 18,000 and our brilliant staff team are supported by more than 70 volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Funding & Finance Management: Write and submit compelling funding bids to secure financial support; steward grants and build relationships with funders; manage budgets, ensuring financial efficiency and sustainability; oversee weekly banking, payroll and pension processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance, working closely with the Finance Officer; lead, support and develop staff and volunteers alongside the Assistant Director, whilst fostering a caring, positive environment; take the Lead on Safeguarding and Equal Opportunities.
  • Site Management: Responsible for the Scrapstore buildings (including Barty’s shop in Lacock village), vehicles and machinery. Manage insurance, utilities, accessibility and maintenance to ensure the optimum operational and environmental capacity. Lead on matters of Health and Safety ensuring that the sites are safe and accessible for all. Main key holder (so must be able to travel to site out of hours for emergencies). Work with café manager to ensure that Health and Safety standards are upheld and that the menu is both profitable and environmentally conscious. Ensure Café is always covered with appropriately trained staff.
  • Advocacy, Education and Community Engagement: Spearhead Scrapstores mission to reduce waste and protect our environment. Confidently represent the organisation with a variety of stakeholders and outside organisations. Work with Assistant Director and Workshop Leaders to initiate, develop and deliver a dynamic program of Play pod Training and creative workshops to schools, organisations and the wider community, as well as in-house events for people of all ages. Able to present a friendly face to all people who visit or engage with us, including members and visitors to the sites.
  • Procurement of scrap materials, hand crafted items and shop stock: Work with the Assistant Director to source and secure donations of scrap materials (post industrial and commercial waste) for creative activities and resale, as well as products for the shops, ensuring they are safe, legal and fit for purpose. Work with Assistant Director and Social Media Officer to deliver an engaging and genuine promotion of our services. Maintain and develop networking opportunities with Scrapstores regionally and nationally as well as other charities, schools and local organisations to ensure the organisation is widely recognised and valued.
  • Strategy and Evaluation: Work with the Trustees and key team members to effectively evaluate our work to influence direction and continuous improvement. Drive and produce the business plan for the organisation. Organise and attend bi-monthly board meetings to update Trustees on latest initiatives, budgets, finances, funding bids as well as H&S and safeguarding issues. Maintain and update policies to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices, in partnership with the Trustees. Liaise with trustees and other professional advice to ensure that the Scrapstore complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Administration: Oversee (with the Assistant Director) staff and volunteer hours to ensure cover for all key activities and events. Oversee event and activity bookings and invoicing in liaison with key staff members and the Finance Officer.

  • A strong understanding of the social impact of creative activities in our communities. A good understanding of formal and informal education needs and ways of working.
  • Experience or knowledge of the charitable sector, laws and best practice including understanding of the role of a Trustee board.
  • Experience in facilities management.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends if required.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and other relevant IT programs.
  • Confident to explore and use new IT programs, including AI, point of sale programs, member databases and accountancy software. Maintain accurate records and reports.
