What to Expect in the Role

You will be part of a small team of lawyers providing comprehensive, practical and solution-focused legal advice and support on commercial contracts and public procurement. You will analyse, interpret and summarise complex issues for a variety of audiences, deliver high-quality work to tight deadlines, and lead and/or command discussions as needed. You will manage your own caseload and work in wider project teams to deliver outcomes. You will normally work with limited day-to-day supervision, with support and mentoring available as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head of Service, Legal Services Manager and Team Leader in advising Members and Officers on legal matters to ensure Councils act in accordance with the law.
  • Provide, or facilitate, comprehensive, practical and solution-focused legal advice for officers and councillors, including the Management Team and Cabinets.
  • Attend meetings (e.g., Council meetings, Cabinet and Executive meetings, committees, tribunals, and working groups) to provide legal advice and support as required.
  • Manage and deliver a personal caseload of legal matters, including those of a complex and/or sensitive nature.
  • Contribute to an effective, efficient, value-for-money legal service, including provision of advice and support for external clients.

What You’ll Need

  • Post-qualification experience as a legal adviser in commercial contracts (works, services, supplies and concessions, grant funding agreements) and public procurement law and procedure.
  • Thorough knowledge of the law relating to commercial contracts and procurement.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to write and present lucid reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and summarise complex legislation and technical information.
  • Ability to understand clients’ motivations and goals and provide practical, solution-focused legal advice.
