Senior Environmental Crime Officer – National Investigations Team

Responsibilities

  • Lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes, coordinating and overseeing all aspects from identification of lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, to coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to casefile preparation and prosecution.
  • Work alongside Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to drive cases forward and develop investigative teams and complex investigations.
  • Handle investigations that can involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports, and large-scale fraud; apply experience to manage high-profile cases.

Team

Role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of investigators focused on bringing the most serious environmental offenders to justice. You will help lead, coordinate, and progress investigations and contribute to team development.

Experience/Skills Required

  • High level of attention to detail; hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation (PACE and CPIA); excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, experience leading serious criminal investigations, and familiarity with the workings of a Major Incident Room is desirable.
  • Proven ability to drive, initiative-taking, and experience in building and developing investigation teams is beneficial.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting is required within six months of probation; a full driving licence is required.

Working arrangements and travel

This is a hybrid role with working from home and a nearby Environment Agency Office. Frequent travel for meetings and operational duties is expected. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, with training and adjustments provided as needed. Incident response may attract additional payment.
