Overview

The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. You will work with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes, coordinating all aspects from initial lines of enquiry to casefile preparation and prosecution.

This is a hybrid role with flexible working from home and an Environment Agency office. Frequent travel for meetings and operational duties is expected. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, with training and workplace adjustments provided as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coordinate and progress investigations into serious environmental crime (often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud).
  • Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, and oversee evidence gathering and interviews.
  • Prepare case files and support prosecution; work with Partnership Organisations and develop investigative teams.
  • Contribute to the operation of the Major Incident Room and ensure investigations are conducted efficiently and effectively.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High level of attention to detail; self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication skills; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Experience in environmental crime, leading serious criminal investigations, and familiarity with Major Incident Room workings is desirable.
  • Ability to drive and develop investigation teams; able to work proactively using initiative.
  • Full driving licence required; successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting within 6 months of appointment.
