The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We seek an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of running major investigations. Experience of working with Partnership Organisations and of leading, driving and developing investigative teams and complex investigations is desirable.

You will work with our Senior Investigation Managers and our Major Incident Room to lead investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes. You will use your knowledge and experience to drive cases forward by coordinating and overseeing all aspects of investigations—from identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to casefile preparation and eventual prosecution.

Investigations can be complex and varied, often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud. This role offers an opportunity for someone with relevant investigative experience to apply their skills to serious environmental crime.

The team

This role sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of Investigators working to bring serious environmental offenders to justice. Your skills will help lead, coordinate and progress investigations, and you will contribute to developing the team. Please see our Additional Information Pack for details.

Experience/skills Required

  • You should have a high level of attention to detail, be hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA, excellent verbal and written skills, and basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime and leading on serious investigations; experience with Major Incident Rooms is desirable.
  • A background of being driven, using initiative to find solutions and building/developing investigation teams would be beneficial.
  • Successful completion of both SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes is required within a 6-month probationary period. A full driving licence is required.

This is a hybrid role with flexible work from home and from your nearest Environment Agency Office. Frequent travel for meetings and operational duties is required. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; you must be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support.
