Overview

The Environment Agency is looking for an experienced investigator to join the National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. The role involves leading investigations into serious and complex environmental crimes, coordinating and overseeing all aspects of investigations from initial lines of enquiry to casefile preparation and prosecution. The team is part of the National Environmental Crime Unit within the National Regulation and Monitoring Team.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into serious environmental crimes.
  • Coordinate and drive investigations: identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, coordinate evidence gathering and interviews, and prepare case files for prosecution.
  • Lead investigations that can involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud; coordinate teams and develop investigative capabilities.
  • Contribute to developing the team and processes to progress investigations efficiently.

Experience and skills

  • High level of attention to detail, hard working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communications; basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime and experience in leading serious criminal investigations; familiarity with Major Incident Room operations is desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams; ability to drive and initiate solutions.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 vetting processes within a 6-month probationary period; a full driving licence is required.

Role specifics

  • Hybrid working: work from home and from your nearest Environment Agency Office; travel to meetings and for operational duties.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during incidents (may attract additional pay; full training and workplace adjustments provided).
