Overview

The Environment Agency is committed to an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We seek a Senior Environmental Crime Officer to join the National Investigations Team, working with Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room to lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes. The role offers a challenging opportunity to drive investigations from identifying lines of enquiry through to case-file preparation and prosecution, including cases involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate complex or protracted environmental crime investigations, including identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, and case-file preparation for prosecution.
  • Work with the National Investigations Team and Major Incident Room to progress investigations and develop the team.
  • Manage investigations that may involve Organised Crime Groups and other serious environmental offences, ensuring timely and effective investigation delivery.
  • Contribute to strategic and operational leadership of investigations and support continuous improvement of investigative teams and processes.

Experience and Qualifications

  • High level of attention to detail; hardworking, self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT competency (Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading on serious criminal investigations, and workings of a Major Incident Room would be desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams; ability to lead and drive teams to solutions.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes, to be obtained within a 6-month probationary period.
  • Full driving licence required.
  • Hybrid working arrangement from home and an Environment Agency office; frequent travel for meetings and operational duties; incident-response duties and training may be required, with potential additional payment and workplace adjustments.
  • Contingent to suitability, may include contact with external organisations and reference to Additional Information Pack.
