Overview

The Environment Agency are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a strong investigative background, good communication skills and a sound working knowledge of all aspects of running major investigations. Experience of working alongside Partnership Organisations and of leading, driving and developing investigative teams and complex investigations would be desirable.

This role is within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of investigators who work to bring the most serious environmental offenders to justice. This is a hybrid role with training and workplace adjustments provided as needed. Occasional travel to offices or sites and to meet operational needs should be anticipated.

Responsibilities

  • Lead investigations into the most serious and complex environmental crimes, alongside Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room.
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of investigations: identifying lines of enquiry, reviewing intelligence, raising and allocating actions, coordinating evidence gathering and interviews, through to casefile preparation and prosecution.
  • Work with partnership organisations and develop the investigative team and processes across a range of cases that may involve Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.

Experience and Qualifications

  • High level of attention to detail, hard-working and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading on serious criminal investigations and the workings of a Major Incident Room would be desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams and driving complex investigations.
  • Successful completion of both SC and NPPV2 vetting processes is required within the 6-month probationary period.
  • A full driving licence is required.

  • Responding to incidents is a central duty; you may be required to take incident roles and provide business continuity support, with potential additional payment and full training provided.
