The Analytics & Data Science team is a core capability spread right across the John Lewis Partnership, using advanced analytics and data-driven insights to help stakeholders solve complex problems and make better, more informed decisions. We are the driving force behind the data that powers our two well-loved retail brands, John Lewis and Waitrose.

As a Senior Insight Analyst, you will be a crucial partner embedded within a specific business area, focusing on generating deep, actionable insights into our customers and retail operations. This is a hands-on role where you'll apply your technical expertise in SQL and Python and your talent for clear storytelling to deliver timely recommendations that directly influence business strategy.

Salary - Up to £60,000.

Contract type - This position is a Permanent contract.

Working pattern/flexible working - The Partnership has adopted a hybrid working approach, meaning you'll be able to work a mixture between the office and home based upon your personal needs whilst balancing the needs of the business. The Analytics team aim for around 1-2 days a week in the office to connect and on a more ad-hoc basis to attend key meetings.

Location - This role is based at our London Head Office.

Key responsibilities

  • Dive deep into large, complex datasets, leveraging your SQL and Python skills to manipulate, analyse and provide actionable solutions that drive commercial decision-making.
  • Focus on retail and customer specific analytics, uncovering patterns in behaviour, loyalty, and lifetime value to inform strategic initiatives and marketing campaigns.
  • Partner with our Retail and Commercial teams to provide location-specific insights, helping to optimise store performance and enhance the in-store customer experience.
  • Own the analytical process from end-to-end: structuring complex business problems, identifying the right methodologies, and ensuring your deliverables are timely, high-quality, and analytically sound.
  • Translate your findings into compelling narratives, creating clear and impactful visualisations (e.g., Tableau) and presentations to deliver actionable insights to key stakeholders.
  • Act as a true partner to your stakeholders, embedding yourself within their teams to understand their commercial goals and proactively identify opportunities where data can create value.
  • Champion a data-driven culture, empowering stakeholders and contributing to the development of self-serve analytics tools.
  • Be an active contributor to the Analytics and Data Science team and the Profession.
  • Understand and engage other parts of DI&A as necessary.
  • Ensure that all work complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and adhere to all Partnership risk management and data privacy and security policies.
  • Invest in your personal and professional development utilising the opportunities available to you.
  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to working, joining projects as needed and/or supporting colleagues to secure the success of those projects.
  • Actively share the responsibilities of ownership and support Partners and colleagues to have a voice in our business.

Essential skills and experience you’ll need

  • Experience generating analysis that goes beyond automated reporting, and provides insight that leads to solving business problems.
  • Experience in retail and customer specific analytics, such as store performance, incremental analysis, or customer segmentation.
  • Demonstrable experience with SQL, Python/R, Visualisation Tools such as Tableau.
  • Relevant qualification in a numerate discipline e.g. maths/stats/data science/science or similar.
  • Demonstrable experience in an analytics team applying advanced techniques.

Desirable skills and experience you may have

  • Proven experience interacting with and influencing senior stakeholders, using data-driven insights to shape business strategy.
  • A track record of using a wide range of analytics to directly influence marketing strategy and investment decisions.
