The Skills, Knowledge and Experience You Need

• Service Design Expertise: Proven experience designing end‑to‑end, front‑to‑back services that address complex challenges across departments or business areas.
• User‑Centred Design: Strong ability to apply evidence‑based design principles that meet user, colleague and organisational needs.
• Strategic Communication: Skilled in engaging and influencing stakeholders at all levels to support design decisions and service outcomes.
• Collaboration & Facilitation: Capable of leading conversations, building consensus, and fostering teamwork across multidisciplinary groups.
• Mentorship & Community Engagement: Experience mentoring others and contributing to a culture of openness, learning and shared practice within the service design community.
• Tools & Visualisation: Confident in using service design tools, storytelling and visualisation techniques to articulate service journeys and performance insights.

What You’ll Do

As our new Senior Service Designer, you’ll lead efforts to understand and improve service performance, using storytelling and visualisation to communicate complex service journeys. You’ll guide teams in applying service design methods, facilitate stakeholder engagement, and help align user needs with business and policy goals. The role involves working with cross‑functional teams to design inclusive, resilient services that support the Government’s ‘Get Britain Working’ vision.

Our ideal candidate has substantial experience designing end‑to‑end services, strong communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

You’ll use your skills and experience to foster collaboration within teams and the wider service design community, mentor others and contribute to building a culture of openness and learning. This role is both strategic and hands‑on, offering a chance to shape services that truly matter.

Details – Wages and Perks

Location: You’ll join us in one of our digital hubs in Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle‑upon‑Tyne and Sheffield – whichever is most convenient for you. Regular travel between hubs is expected as part of the role (travel counts as working time and travel and expenses are paid).

Hybrid Working: We work a hybrid model – you’ll spend some time working at home (40%) and some time collaborating face‑to‑face in a hub (60%).

Pay: Competitive pay up to £68,205.

Pension: Civil service pension with employer contributions of 28.97%, worth £16,786 per year.

Holidays: Generous leave package starting at 26 days rising to 31 days over time. You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi‑time and all usual public holidays.
