Overview

Our client, a prominent public service organisation in the Highway, Traffic, and Public Transport (HTP) sector, is currently seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer to join their team on a contract basis. The role focuses on the design and delivery of LIP-funded infrastructure schemes that support the boroughs\' strategic goals around active and sustainable travel. The successful candidate will lead end-to-end delivery of a range of traffic and transport schemes and provide design assurance and construction support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on the design and delivery of LIP-funded sustainable transport and traffic schemes, including:
  • Cycle routes and infrastructure
  • Bus priority and reliability improvements
  • School streets and low traffic neighbourhoods
  • 20mph speed limit/traffic calming schemes
  • Public realm and pedestrian access improvements
  • Develop designs using AutoCAD, including layout drawings, traffic signs, road markings, and construction details
  • Sign off design work, ensuring alignment with national and local design standards (e.g., TSRGD, DMRB, Manual for Streets)
  • Prepare and manage scheme documentation: design reports, risk assessments, consultation plans, cost estimates, and delivery programmes
  • Carry out site visits and assessments to inform design development and construction support
  • Manage contractors and consultants during project implementation
  • Liaise with councillors, residents, schools, TfL, and other stakeholders to ensure successful engagement and project delivery
  • Ensure all schemes are delivered safely, on time, and within budget in compliance with CDM regulations and corporate procedures

Requirements and Expectations

  • Experience leading end-to-end delivery of traffic and transport schemes
  • Ability to produce and sign off technical designs and liaise with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and design standards for transport schemes
  • Experience working with local authorities, councils, or equivalent public sector organisations
  • Commitment to delivering schemes safely, on time, and within budget
