Overview
As an Intelligence Technical Officer in the Environment Agency’s National Environmental Crime Unit, you will build confidence and capability across area teams in intelligence‑led ways of working and the use of intelligence systems to understand Threat, Risk and Harm and drive a better approach to tackling environmental offending and protecting officer safety.
This is a new role within the Intelligence and Partnerships team. You will support area teams by providing Memex training, promoting the use and benefits of Memex, and improving the quality of intelligence submitted. You will provide face‑to‑face training on MEMEX, support area teams to submit intelligence and conduct searches, supervise intelligence logs to ensure high quality submissions, create entities from Memex submissions, and deliver regular performance reports with feedback for improvement.
You will be required to respond to incidents as part of operational duties, with additional training and possible extra payment. Flexible working arrangements are supported; travel to Birmingham and other offices will be required on occasion.

Responsibilities
- Provide Memex training to area staff and promote the system’s use and benefits
- Enable area teams to submit intelligence and conduct searches
- Supervise intelligence logs to maintain high submission quality
- Create entities from Memex submissions
- Provide regular performance reports and guidance for improvement
- Ensure high standards of intelligence submission quality
- Other duties commensurate with the role
Respond to incidents as required, with available incident role and business continuity support during incident periods.
Team and Role Context
The Intelligence Team manages and develops criminal intelligence for the Environment Agency. The team builds strong partner relationships to drive an intelligence‑led approach to tackling environmental crime across regimes, focusing on timely, professional service delivery and continuous improvement to meet customer needs.
Experience / Skills Required
- Self‑motivated and proactive with a good understanding of Intelligence and intelligence systems
- Ability to advocate an intelligence‑led approach and embed it across teams
- Excellent influencing skills; Memex use should be the norm and safety checks mandatory
- Strong relationship building and stakeholder engagement
- Ability to create and deliver engaging, inclusive training
- Excellent communication skills with ability to provide feedback to improve intelligence submissions
- Strong self‑management and organisational skills
- Team oriented with the ability to support colleagues to achieve common goals
Location, Working Arrangements and Additional Information
- Location: flexible; mixture of home and office working supported
- Occasional travel to Birmingham and other offices as required
- Interviews via Microsoft Teams in October

- Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) required
